Theory Bee

What's behind Colony Collapse Disorder? Doris Fischer, an Austrian expat in Stromness, Scotland believes as many do that insecticides are behind CCD. Specifically, Fischer thinks that neonicotinoids obstruct bees' ability to recognise when the days are getting shorter and colder. Once winter sets in, this lack of preparation results in the bee colonies' inability to survive through the cold months. Fischer aims to prove her theory through the two-year experiment that she is conducting with her own bee colonies on the Orkney Islands.
